Giving While Getting Away

There are over 6.5 million second homes in the U.S. – nearly 5% of the nation’s housing stock – yet the potential for engaging second homeowners as donors has not been studied in any depth. Until now. This first-of-its-kind national study highlights what inspires these part-time residents to give and offers organizations actionable strategies to cultivate stronger ties and amplify local impact.

This report, “Giving While Getting Away: What Inspires Donors to Support Their Second-Home Communities,” and supplementary resources explore how, why and when second homeowners support charitable causes in their non-primary residence:

  • The factors that motivate donors to give in their second-home communities
  • Insights about what inspires them to give – and what discourages them
  • Identifying priority issues they support – and in what ways
  • Providing actionable advice on how to find and build relationships with second-homeowners

This research was made possible by the generous support of the Fidelity Charitable Catalyst Fund. The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona served as the organizational home for this donor research project.
